1. Looking back on your childhood, what events do you think shaped who you are today?
My family and I spent summers on a small motor boat in the San Juan Islands off of Washington state when I was growing up. My primary activity was asking questions: Dad, what is the name of that jellyfish? Mom, why does the tide go in and out? My endless, annoying curiosity was present from day one, and has helped lead me to a career in journalism.
2. Were you always interested in writing about design?
No. After learning so much about marine biology and ecosystems from observation as a kid, I wanted to become a marine biologist myself. But my curiosity ran its course halfway through college and I switched to a major in English. It was then that I had time to take my first art history class and my eyes were opened. Then I just kind of fell in to design writing. I love having another interest to learn more about.
