I have never been more excited for spring than I am this year. I am excited to see the yard turning green, hear the frogs singing in the field and watch the birds dance in the sky! Spring decor in our house really just means more fresh flowers and open windows, but I love how creative other people get as they welcome spring.

Here are some of my favorite DIY spring decor projects from around the blogosphere:

From 2002 until last Christmas, I ran exclusively open-source software. (Ended up getting a mac for a specific purpose, but I still use lots of open source on my mac).

    My thoughts:
OS: I agree that Ubuntu is the best option for non-technical users. I’ve run a large number of Linux versions, as well as FreeBSD

Graphics: Gimp is wonderful. If you are interested in vector graphics, inkscape is pretty good. If you happen to be insanely skilled (I’m not), povray and blender both have ray-tracing. (Povray is more text-based. Blender is graphical)

Software development: Does anyone actually pay for compilers?  If you happen to like Visual Studio, you can look into mono…

Entertainment: mplayer is the best!  You can watch just about any format of video, and listen to just about any format of music with mplayer. Also look into mencoder (by the same people), which allows you to convert between any 2 formats that mplayer supports.

Games:  bzflag is the best multi-player game I’ve ever played. Seriously. I love that game.  Aside from that, nethack is a great single-player game, with infinite replayability. I actually know one person who has beaten nethack. However, once you beat it once, you can go back and play it again and have a totally different experience!

Finance: GnuCash. Great for just about any finance need you have!

Love those recommendations, especially GnuCash and mplayer! Thank you for sharing!

Let’s not forget about Open Office as well! http://www.openoffice.org – one of the key features is the ability to save in pretty much any format, including Word .doc & .docx, in case those you’re sending the file to cannot read the OpenOffice format. I’ve not found any lacking functionality, especially since the last update. It’s also fantastic for those sharing files worldwide – I know I’ve run into compatibility issues with some of my clients (I freelance writing, editing, & graphic design) that has held up major projects before. Then we got intelligent and both grabbed the latest Open Office Suite. (lol)

Good point about OpenOffice! LibreOffice is forked from the OpenOffice project. I’ve used both and prefer Libre but that’s just my own preference. Both work equally well. And thanks for pointing out the file sharing function. I haven’t used that myself but I’m sure it comes in handy for many folks!
