Decorating With Maps

A trend that I’ve noticed in recent months is a resurgence of decorating with maps. Not just “normal” decorating with maps like hanging a world map in a classroom or placing a floor-standing globe in an office. This recent trend takes decorating with maps to a stellar level.

The thrifty part of my brain loves the concept of decorating with maps because they are incredibly reasonable, easy to find {school supply stores, flea markets, antique shops} and so versatile.  Having many different options is a great way to get creative with your own personal home decor.

You’re probably thinking that I’ve completely lost my mind, but I’m going to show you several phenomenal ways to use maps as home decor which might change your mind!

Here we go:

Unframed Wall Decor

Layered maps, displayed in a collage style and applied to the wall, mimic wallpaper in a beautiful way.  The unique character, depth and texture that maps add to this bedroom space is absolutely stunning!

Framed Wall Decor

Maps and picture frames are quite easy to find at thrift shops and yard sales. When combined together, they create an incredibly inexpensive, yet “big wow moment” in any room.  I love how the turquoise ceramics play with the ocean color in the map as well.

Decoupaged Furniture

The possibilities are endless when decoupaging maps onto furniture. I’ve seen gorgeous chairs, chests {like the one above}, console tables, side tables and even night stands decoupaged with maps.  I might get a wild hair one of these days and tackle a map-covered piece of furniture myself!

Accessories

At this point, I think I’m falling for maps. Are you?  There are so many different accessories that can be created with maps.  Coasters, map-wrapped candles, wreaths, mobiles, banners and lampshades are just a few map related projects that you can use to decorate your home.

Globes

Using globes to decorate your home can be both simple or dramatic.  A single globe makes a conversation piece statement, and grouping several globes in various sizes is an amazing attention grabber.  An antique shop that I walked through one day recently had a globe in almost every booth.  Now I wish I had picked one up!

I know that decorating with maps and globes isn’t for everyone, but I hope you’ve been inspired to think outside the box to make your home decor uniquely…you!
