Decorating With Brights

Neutral spaces with colorful accessories are huge right now.  By selecting neutral tones, from ecrus and oatmeals to khakis and mushrooms, for the ”framework” {walls, floors, ceiling, architectural elements} of your home decor, you create a fabulous and simple backdrop that shows off bright and colorful accents. This decorating concept is wonderful because you can easily and inexpensively transform the look of your home by changing up accessories and artwork.

Here are a few ways to add bright splashes of color to your home decor…

1. Artwork

I adore the new gallery wall at Young House Love.  John and Sherry used photographs and meaningful items to make their hallway uniquely beautiful. Whether you prefer colorful oil paintings or kids’ art on your walls, you can use artwork to brighten up and personalize your home.

2.  Lamps

Decorating with lamps is limitless fun because there are so many different styles available. Lamps are statement pieces, so purchase well {making sure it’s not too trendy} and you will be able to use your lamps for many years.  It is easy to find lamps at thrift shops and yard sales that may just need to be rewired, spray painted or paired with a new shade.  Don’t be afraid to think outside the box!

3. Pillows and Throws

The easiest and most cost-effective way to bring color into your home decor is to use pillows and throws.   I like to use heavier, darker throws in the winter and lighter, brighter throws or quilts in the summer.  The same concept goes for pillows – having a few different options for various seasons can make a wonderful visual impact in your space. TJMaxx, Marshalls and Kohl’s are a few of my favorite places to find pillows and throws at reasonable prices.

4. Accessories

If pillows and throws are the most easy, cost-effective home decorating “do”. After that, then accessories are the second most accessible decorating element.  Fabulous accessories are everywhere. They call our name at stores, yard sales and thrift shops sometimes begging for new life from a can of spray paint. Decorating with colorful accessories {candle holders, trays, vases, books, etc} delivers beautiful and necessary layering and texture.

5. Accent Furniture

I readily admit that it takes some guts to go out on a proverbial decorating limb to add colorful accent furniture to your home.  Last year, I painted a thrift store desk apple green and it is my very favorite piece of furniture. In the picture above, the turquoise chair pops in the neutral space, while coordinating with the vase and lighter blue tones in the throw pillows and window coverings. The rug also ties in beautifully with the bamboo window shades.

The possibilities are endless for adding punches of color to your home in artwork, lamps, pillows & throws, various accessories and accent furniture. There are no rules – except that you have to love it!

What is your favorite color to decorate with?

I’m a sucker for grilled pineapple, for either savory or sweet purposes. I love it especially with teriyaki beef kabobs or Filipino pork BBQ. It makes for a great luau dish!
