A Virtual Home Tour: My Home Office & Homeschool Room

by Mandi on November 15, 2010

Home OfficeOver the past few months, I’ve been taking you on a virtual tour of our home. I’ve been a little slow in getting the upstairs done, partly because things have been so busy and partly because we’re still finishing a lot of things upstairs. Today, though, I want to show you around my home office.

Between homeschooling and working more than full time, I spend a lot of time in this office, so it’s important to me that it’s truly a place I love…and I do. Sean helped me make it a place that really reflects me and makes me feel energized and happy, which are definitely good things!

Home Office

I love how  bright the office is, even on overcast days, thanks to all of the windows. I also appreciate having this comfy chair in the corner, mostly because it gives the girls or Sean a place to sit when they want to come hang out with me during the day.

Home Office

On the other side of the room, directly across from my desk, is the wardrobe that contains our toys (on the left side) as well as homeschool supplies and arts & crafts (on the right side). The girls also have their own desk with space above for them to display their artwork.

Here is a closer look at some of my favorite accessories in the room:

Home OfficeJennifer from The Simple Stencil sent me this beautiful vinyl wall lettering for my office with the name of my company — Purple Martin Press, LLC – which we applied to the wall next to my desk. I chose a subtle, soft gray and a pretty script, and it makes me smile every time I look at it!

Home OfficeI first saw these Umbra frames at a little boutique shop several months ago, and I decided to redeem some of my Swagbucks for an Amazon.com gift card and treat myself to the set. The girls especially love to point out their pictures hanging on the wall!

Home OfficeI’ve been coveting these vintage-style keys from Pottery Barn for quite a while, and Sean surprised me with them for our anniversary. I’m not 100% sold on keeping them in the window, but until I come up with something better, it works for me!

Home OfficeThis is my Keurig coffee maker, aka my best friend. Seriously, I love this thing, and it totally deserves its place of honor on my desk!

Home OfficeThese Ikea boxes hold my K-Cups, snacks and extra school supplies. On the right, I keep extra magazines and extra curriculum. There’s just enough room for my work and homeschool binders on top of the smaller boxes, so they’re hidden away but still accessible.

Home OfficeAlthough a chair really should be more comfortable than cute, I’m glad my chair is both! This Brenton Studio chair is from Office Max, and I love that it swivels & rolls. The blanket was my grandmothers, and I love to wrap up in it while I work!

Home OfficeSean painted this a couple of years ago, and although he’s never been very happy with it, it’s always been one of my favorites, so I insisted that we find a place for it in my office. We often add a vase of bright colored flowers to the shelf in front of it, and the contrast is really beautiful.

I love these ideas – and especially love when I know I have cleaned behind my frig!! I know what I will be up to in the next few days at my house – more decluttering!

Nice post! I need to be reminded of such things as cleaning out behind the fridge, to make it work more efficiently. thx!

I just subscribed to this website and I really like it but I also hope to win the $75 gift certificate to the Vintage Pearl. I wasn’t sure where to leave the comment. :)

Thanks for the great tips! I just finished the guest bathroom. Didn’t take but about 2.5 hrs of reorganizing, cleaning etc. Thanks for the checklist! It is my 8 year old’s responsibility to keep the bathroom picked up. I am going to make him a check list to follow every day. I mentioned your article in my blog!

I like that you have a place for everything. It looks clean and fresh. So many times office and homeschool spaces are so “busy” that it is hard to concentrate!

I love the cabinet with next to the school desk. It looks great!!! Can’t wait to see more.

Thanks — what a fun idea!

  • Diane

What are the desks made out of? dimensions? Was there a reason for the desks to be not very deep?

Love how everything has a “home” and the colors seem to flow together.. Love the chair and Sean’s painting too..

I just made a dent in my “office” today. Seeing yours helped to inspire me more! I love the keys, my 17 year old has an obsession with key jewelry, she would love these too!

I JUST told my husband the other day that there should be a way to sort the books on my Kindle! I have the newest kind, I hope I have this option :)

  • Olson98

I got my Kindle a month ago and quickly grew tired of the lists and lists of books. I did the categories and it cleared things up quickly.
I love my Kindle! My eyes are quite bad, and I’ve had to give up my favorite pastime (reading) so I could save my eyes for work. NO LONGER! I love the varied font sizes. I never thought I’d be able to read from any type of e-reader.

  • http://www.manylittleblessings.com Angie @ Many Little Blessings

Fabulous tip! I knew there had to be a way to close them, but I just hadn’t tried to look into it. So excited to know now, and had a ton of apps open. Augh!

When I’m feeling unmotivated, it is usually because I’m feeling overwhelmed! So, the best thing for me is to begin a task that I know I can accomplish quickly… empty the dishwasher, fold one basket of laundry, clean my bathroom counter. Accomplishing ONE thing usually helps me get momentum going to check more off my list. If not, then I can crash knowing that at least I’m moving in the right direction.

  • kathy

Getting motivated is really hard for me. I’m lazy; I can admit it. So if I plop on the couch, I’m toast. There is usually napping and much TV involved. For me, the key is to make a list and start it and basically not sit down till I’m done. Lately (as in the past two days), I’ve been trying to do the task at hand as quickly as I can so that I can then do something I enjoy. In the past (three days ago), I’d just do what I enjoy and put the work/chores off till later, in which later means when my husband nags me to death. So for me, when I’m not motivated (always), I need to get up in the morning with the thought that I’m definitely going to accomplish something today and not sit down till I do it. And I find, as always, that once I get started, it’s easy to keep going till it’s all done.

I struggle with being motivated more often than not. I’m still trying to figure out the best way for me to get motivated, but I definitely agree with not sitting down and taking a break, then I just end up never getting up, and working on one small task that is easily accomplished.

One thing I find is that when I’m tired I’m even more likely to be unmotivated – so getting enough sleep is definitely key for me. I also love to turn on music – music makes doing even the most dreaded and mundane tasks a little more fun!

    • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

I agree on both points, Emily — sleep and music both help me stay motivated
      too!

  • Princesskirin

This is a great “reminder” but then it’s the people that we “delegate” to that are I question… They may or not not do it and if they do…Will it be done right and will you hear the complaints. :) LOL To me I know my day is packed… but it kind of gives me the excuse to not do their favorite things because they will not do the tasks I delegated to them. LOL

I Do need to learn how to schedule my day better. I do like to sleep but just can’t seem to get enough of it. :)

Very nice and inspiring! As a beginning homeschooler, I’ve needed some ideas and was happy to see the space you’ve created.

    I remember Doodles place!!

My blog has done more of a slow morphing over time and I’m a bit sad that I don’t have screen shots of some of my earlier looks.

Thank you for this look at the evolution of your blogging!

  • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com Joyce and Norm

It’s so neat to see the changes that take place on different blog during the different seasons of the blogger’s life. Thanks for sharing the evolution of your blog.

We mostly blog to keep our family around the world updated on our lives, but I have found some wonderful communities around the blogosphere that has made me see that some of my thoughts/experiences can be an encouragement or inspiration to someone else, so I do take part in a few link-ups too. Other than that, I don’t see too much changes around our little space on the Internet. =p

  • Carol @ arewethereyet

I too am trying to morph my blog from one that started out as a way to keep family and friends informed as my hubby and I were traveling full time in our RV to one that I hope will provide some income for us in the future – I am not there yet, but I am working on building my readership and finding my niche.  There is so much to learn – but I am determined.  It’s nice to know that others have taken the same path that I am on now!

  • http://www.momdropbox.com Audrey

Love seeing this Mandi!  In the 6 or 7 months that I’ve been blogging, I see how it’s really like anything else: you build upon what you know little by little.

  • http://www.pandorasdeals.com/ Lindsay

Love this!  Thanks for sharing your blogging evolution.  I feel like mine is taking some new turns right now, too, and I’m glad to get some reassurance that that’s ‘okay’, and it’s good to let it grow in different directions.  Good reminder to get those screen shots, too!  Thanks, Mandi!

I use Google Reader everyday that I read blog posts, and enjoy being able to see the posts I am interested in all in one place.  Question:  how do you keep from getting overwhelmed with all the posts?  I have several blogs that I like to read regularly, but I find that if I miss reading for one day (and some days, I only need to wait a few hours) the posts quickly add up to something that could take hours to read through.  Of course this does not include the blogs I look at for a time since they were recommended by someone I usually read.  Those really add up if I don’t purge them regularly.  Do you have a method to how you categorize your subscriptions?  Do you only read sites that are relevant to what you are writing about it?

    • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com Joyce and Norm

When I miss a day of reading, if I’m feeling overwhelmed by the number of posts, I will just “Mark All As Read”. Yikes! I know, it’s tough, but it’ll be fine.

Every few months I do go through my subscription list and unsubscribe to blogs that I have lost interest in, or doesn’t inspire, encourage, or benefit me in any other way. I obviously don’t have time to comment on every post I read, but usually the blogs that I do subscribe to I leave at least a comment on there from time to time. If not, they usually get the boot. Harsh, I know, but we’re all limited in the time that we have, and you can’t have ‘reading blog’ prioritized over your family, eating, or showering. Hope that’s helpful.

  • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com Joyce and Norm

Flipboard sounds great, bummer I don’t have an iPad.

  • http://yourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

Isn’t it funny how we put something on our to-do list because it seems so
important only to realize that it’s really not that important? I do that a
    lot!

  • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

Ah, but when I started, *I* was just a novice. That’s the beauty of blogging! Can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

I just downloaded, but I think one difference is that Wunderlist can be used more as a task list where you can check off things. I do use Evernote, for notes, and post ideas, and have used for grocery list. I want to give Wunderlist a try, though, as I had been looking for something like this.

  • http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com Joyce and Norm

Nope, I have an Android. My husband has an iPhone so I’ll have him check it out, but he doesn’t use Reader (yet).
