I love blankets and throws, and because we keep our home so cold in the winter, we have quite a few throughout our home. We use throws as part of our decor throughout the whole year, but now that winter is approaching, you’ll find more of them folded and stacked in corners or on the couch so they’re ready when we want to cuddle underneath them to stay warm.

When my husband and I first had the idea to create a gallery of ways to use a throw, I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to come up with 9 ideas. But as we started looking, we ended up finding even more that I didn’t include here. Of all of them, I have to say my favorite is the wool throw used on a dining room table, and we’re thinking about adding something similar to our picnic table for the fall and winter as well!

How do you use throws in your home?

In the fall and winter, I love to simmer some water in a pan, with a cinnamon stick, a few cloves, and a few strips of orange rind. Making a pot of hot apple cider is good too.

Awww my mom used to use a cinnamon stick..and it was really wonderful!

We use a wood burning stove to heat our home. So for us, the only smell we smell during the winter months is wood burning.

And call me crazy, but I will occasionally open the windows even when it’s freezing outside – just to air out the house for an hour.

I like to throw a dryer sheet at the bottom of the trash can before we put in the garbage bag. It helps keep the trash can smelling good. More citrus scents are best.

Do you listen to music all day, or just during certain activities? ALL DAY!
What is your favorite type of music? mostly country, some blues/jazz and lots of “oldies” (60s/70s/80s)…..yeah OLD……
Do you find music distracting or soothing? usually very soothing…..unless it’s something “the kids” are listening to in the next car with LOTS of bass…
Do your kids like music? love it!
Do you keep music playing while you sleep? yep, Suzanne Chiani, David Lanz, Accoustic Alchemy, smooth jazz/new agey stuff……

I like silence. I used to like music, but then I retired from school teaching and began to appreciate quiet now that I had it. My daughter (21 months) does not like nearly all music and says “moosic OFF” when I try to put some on. She also says “TV off!” I think I’ve trained her to like quiet. I listen to books on cd in the car and LOVE that.

Music on pretty much all day here … sometimes low as background noise and sometimes turned up to help the house cleaning go a little faster. We’ve been known to get down and shake our booties in this house, too :-)

Right now I’m on a big Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams kick with a dash of Pink thrown in for good measure. The kids are very into They Might Be Giants, Ralph’s World, and the soundtrack from The Nightmare Before Christmas right now (oogie boogie!)

    Fun topic!

We usually just turn the radio on in the morning and leave it on all day long until the kids go to bed. Unless I’m in the mood for something specific I don’t really care what goes on. Most of the time I just let the radio go on with the top 40 radio station (which drives hubs nuts because they must play justin bieber about 80 times a day) but since I’m not really listening it doesn’t bother me. If I try to put on ‘kid’ music, my daughter complains, which really, I can’t blame her for.

I mostly listen to music in the car, but occasionally will turn some on while I cook dinner to burn off some energy – or on those two occasions a year when I find myself working out. My current favorite musicians are probably John Mayer, Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani but I also love the Beatles, Janis Joplin, etc. I have very eclectic taste in music in general but those are my favorites.

I listen to music all day at work and when I’m cleaning the house.

I love listening to music! Most of my music listening is at home while I clean or cook. I enjoy all kinds of music but I tend to lean more towards Indie and Alternative. My children enjoy music too but not as much as I thought they would.

Silence is always good to have and I really enjoy it when I have it but there is nothing like hearing a good beat or singing along to poetic lyrics.

I listen to music while working out…while on the elliptical I listen to classical, while lifting I listen to the Skillet station on Pandora…I know, completely opposite. There is NO way I can listen to music while sleeping…I need it super quiet. The only other time we listen to music is while in the car…the girls have their Bible songs. Oh- does piano lessons count? Obviously we have to listen to piano while my first daughter practices….

I listen to Classical music 24/7, at work, at home, in the car. Then from November through New Years, I listen to Christmas music!
The classical so relaxes me and it TERRIFIC and Christmas just makes me happy and makes the season magical.

I like to listen to country, jazz, relaxing music. When I am stressed or need just calmbing, relaxing music, I LOVE Celtic Woman. I like to have music in the background if I am cleaning house or on the computer. I always have it on in the car.

I loooooove music. And I’m listening to JJ Heller too! We listen to it all day, but not while we sleep. Although, my three year old has a little music thing he turns on at night sometimes…
I tend to prefer female artists with deep lyrics and lots of guitar. JJ Heller, Brooke Fraser, Addison Road. But I also really like the David Crowder Band, NeedToBreathe and Dave Barnes. And, really, I love any kind of music with decent lyrics. However, if the lyrics are bad (either against what I believe or just lame) I can’t handle it.

My kids love music too. It’s kind of a requirement in our house. :-)

LOL, ours too — my kids have very strong preferences about what they like and don’t like!

Oh, I like #6! I hadn’t though of that one before!

  • beebeefox

As classy as it sounds…total sarcasm…we put them up in the boys’ windows to block out light so they’ll sleep later. :_)

for over a decade i’ve always had my throws on a towel rod in the living room. i’ve selected my favorite/most chic styled towel rod in the bathroom section at the store. come home & mounted on the wall where would best go in that current room’s layout. then hang my fave throw of the moment. works out well cause it’s always within reach, plus i’m never worried that it’s dropped on the floor, or in the way. very convenient! ;) enjoy!

Such a great idea, Keely — do you have a picture?

Okay, I feel like a dork. I need a diagram. WHERE is middle click? My mouse had a left and a right with a wheel in the middle. There’s no middle button. Is my mouse defective?

Bummer, this doesn’t work on my mouse. Cool idea though!

Making sure your current avatar actually looks like you is important too! While planning for your conference, if you have changed your hairstyle or color since your current avatar, change the picture as soon as you can so that people can get used to that avatar and they actually recognize you when they see you! What’s so funny is when people see you and say “Oh, you look JUST like your avatar!”
Maybe one day we’ll get to meet at a conference, Amy!Bernice

Yes, so what happened to me is that I desperately need a trim, so I made an appointment about 2 weeks before Relevant. I rarely get my hair cut (because if I have 2 hours to myself, I typically don’t want to spend them in a chair!), but there I was in that chair and I figured that since I was paying so much for a cut, I might as well get my money’s worth and do something a bit different. Thus, bangs. Oh my, if I could do it all over again…. LOL! Live and learn.

When you say avatar, do you mean the profile picture?  I thought an avatar was a computer generated drawing of yourself?

  • Frugalflamingo

Great post!  Yes…I too made sure to put my pic on my business cards this year for relevant.  Although dying your hair before the conference doesn’t help in recognizability:)  Lucky for me everyone remembers a flamingo:)

    • http://bloggingwithamy.com Amy Lynn Andrews

LOL, I hear ya. I just cut bangs recently but haven’t switched out my avatar so I’m guilty as well. :)
