With Summer right around the corner, warm temperatures and fun activities are drawing us outside into the fresh air. Entertaining friends and family, relaxing in a hammock, enjoying the birds singing in the morning, splashing in a pool and soaking up sunshine are just a few of the things that make outdoor living so desirable this time of year.

Regardless of whether you have a small apartment balcony or a sprawling front porch and back yard deck, there are simple ways to spruce up your outdoor living space to make it more inviting for yourself and guests.

No matter the occasion or budget, you create a special space where you and your guests can soak in the warmth of summer.  Consider these 5 simple tips to create an outdoor living space:

Comfortable Furniture

It is absolutely imperative to have comfortable furniture on your porch or patio. Folding lawn chairs or iron patio furniture with adorable cushions work well. Whichever fits in your budget is great as long as you enjoy sitting in them. Besides chairs, be sure to consider a stool, box or cushion to put your feet up on after a long day.

Cozy Lighting

Lighting is a design element that must be considered especially since we enjoy outdoor living as temperatures cool in the evenings. From tiki torches and candles to huge lanterns and string lights, there are a multitude of various ways to add lighting ambiance to your space.  Choose what you love and go for it.

Functional Surfaces

I will never forget my interior design professor emphasizing repeatedly the necessity of having functional surfaces near each seat. You probably know how annoying it is to sit down only to realize that there’s no place to set your drink. Create a “surface” for magazines, snacks or drinks from a box, a garden stool or an old tree stump…or you could just use a table.  Don’t be afraid to be creative!

Colorful Pillows

If your outdoor space is covered by a porch so rain doesn’t come in, then I recommend adding colorful pillows or floor cushions.  Pillows and cushions add texture and pops of color which are just perfect for outdoor Summer living.

Plants and Flowers

The beautiful outdoor spaces that always catch my eye are those with a lot of life from plants and flowers.  If you have a brown-ish thumb like me, cut flowers may be your best bet for special occasions. However, if you are a gardener, then potted plants are an excellent, budget-friendly solution to add color and complete your outdoor space.

Do you have an outdoor living space that you are enjoying this season?

I just finished updating my Home Management Notebook system for fall. I’m SO excited. Life Your Way printables are the only ones I use, they are fabulous! I don’t know what I’d do with out the Weekly Menu Plan (without days) or the Weekly Overview.

Thanks so much, Jennifer — I’m glad the printables have been helpful for you!

Your system seems to be working really great for you, and I’m definitely a fan of AwesomeNote too!

You said that you have digitized your notebook now – what does that look like?  That sounds more appealing to me.

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

      Hey Nikki!

I honestly haven’t perfected my digital system yet. I’ve used AboutOne off and on, which is a great system for organizing all of your information in a safe and secure environment, and I’m currently using a NeatDesk scanner (and their proprietary software) to scan in all my documents and get them tagged and organized. If I get to a place where I feel like I have a great system, I will definitely post about it!

Thank you for making the video.  It really helps!  Here’s my notebook :)

I was resistant to the idea at first, but then I decided to go ahead and make one sometime last year- and it has really worked! The key was not to listen to what anyone else said I “should” include in it- just to look around my own space and see what kind of stuff was piling up and in need of organization. Here’s how mine turned out:

While you mentioned the morbid, yet important, reason for having a household notebook, another good reason is if you have someone come in and watch your kids. Not just the emergency info, but phone numbers of the dance teacher or your daughter’s friend’s mother number. Or the vet. Or the plumber. So it is a good reference for lots of reasons!

      Good point, Bernice!

Love your system — such gorgeous binders/folders too!!

I agree with Nikki, did you use a specific program for digitizing your notebook?  My husband & I use Apple products & LOVE that we can add to our calendar & it updates on all the electronics.  I don’t know how we lived before a syncronizing calendar.(Oh, wait, yes I do it went-when did you decide to do that?  Well, it wasn’t on the calendar!  Well, I don’t SEE your calendar, you should have put it on mine!)  Would love to find out the details on your digitizing.  Thanks!

Hi — thanks for commenting! I’m not sure if you saw my response to Nikki, but unfortunately I don’t yet have a system worthy of sharing…but I’m getting there. AboutOne is a great online service that serves as a digital home management notebook, and I’ve also been really impressed with the software that accompanies the NeatDesk scanner for organizing documents I scan. However, I’d really like *one* system, versus multiple moving parts, so that’s what I’m still trying to work out!

I am in the same boat…I have one HUGE binder on the kitchen counter and some items in Springpad that syncs w/ my phone & computer, scanned items in a “House Manager” section of Dropbox that also syncs, but not one consistent way that merges the paper things and the digital world.  Lately, I’ve even been wondering how to have a system where my 5yo can look at our Home Manager to see our routine, etc. but the huge binder is not kid-friendly and neither is an electronic version.

Will be looking forward to seeing your finished digitized version in my reader one day (no pressure)! ;-)

        Thanks for the great article!

Oh, and another way to organize that I found helpful is to have tabs/sections for individual family members in addition to all the other sections.

        • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

Hehe, no pressure at all. Love the addition of person-specific tabs!

I would love it if someone would design something like this for the ipod and/or ipad. I can download the forms and keep them in my ipod, but it would be great to have an app for something like this that was a bit more interactive.

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

Agreed — that would be a very useful app! It’s something I’ve thought about working on, but I’ll admit it’s a whole new area that I don’t know much about at this point. I’ll let you know if I find anything like this.

      Thanks so much!

      • Heather G

If you do an app like that I’d be the first to purchase it.  Or even if you do an article about software programs (w/accompanying apps) that we can use to build our own electronic hmb.

        • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

          That’s a great suggestion, Heather — I’ll see what I can find!

  • Sarah

You are so awesome!  Thank you so much for doing this!  I am new the the home binder but after watching your video I realize how important it really is.  Thank you for sharing all those printables!

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

You’re welcome, Sarah — thanks for taking the time to comment!

  • http://thenoble5.wordpress.com/ delee

i use a hmb most everyday- but sometimes i get out of it for a week or so and my life is a disaster- no supper for my family, no bills paid, and no bible readings done.  When i keep up with the binder life is a breeze with 3 little babes and a hubby.  I LOVE MY BINDER!!

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

LOL — I love your enthusiasm! Thanks for chiming in!

  • Leslie Newhall

Great tips!  I will definitely try to use them!
